I have installed Windows Server 2012 and have VPN enabled. However the router that our small business uses - the D-Link DGL-4500 - does not support VPN apparently (even though I can put the ports in, etc. This has been reported on multiple forums that no one has ever successfully used VPN with the DGL-4500 Router).
I have all of the services set up in Server 2012, including remote services and VPN. Can anyone recommend a cheap router solution that has wireless and support the ability to port forward VPN to the server?
Before anyone asks - yes I already opened ports 1723 (TCP only), 443 (TCP only), 1701 (UDP only) and 500 (UDP only) and forwarded these ports to the server, and the DGL-4500 interface says these are enabled and functioning, but from the outside world I only get error 720 or error 800 when trying to connect, meaning the Router is not letting VPN in to the server. This is a fault of the firmware, as I have verified I have Windows 7 set up properly - no encryption, handshake/CHAPS checked, IP address correct, and port 1723 open in my home router.
I want to go to my boss with good recommendations for a router, but we are a 501-3(c) nonprofit and they do not have thousands of dollars to toss around, so if anyone can recommend a budget solution that will allow me to port forward VPN to the server, I would GREATLY appreciate this!!!
I did come across a C881W-A-K9 Cisco router from TechSoup (an organization that works with 501-3(c) whom we deal with regularly) that says it can VPN, but I am confused because it says it "comes with 20 VPN connections", yet in the next paragraph it says I have to get separate licensing for 10 VPN connections SSL. Does anyone know or have any experience with this? I have never ran a VPN router before, or a Cisco Router at all. If this Router comes with a VPN built in that even 2 or 3 people can connect to, problem solved. If not, then I'd love recommendations from the community here that uses Server 2012.
My current setup: Microsoft Windows Server 2012 Standard (GUI) and Windows 7 Ultimate Edition Clients at work and 2 Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Clients mobile on their laptops, and 1 Windows 8 Netbook (mine) for mobile support.
Thank you.
