I have an old server running SBS 2003 R2 with SQL 2005 std on it. Due to slow decay in functionality (small HDDs, various issues in function such as loss of WSUS, exchange and sharepoint functions, I decided to do the following:
1: Add a new server (20 Gb RAM, 4 TB disk space) with server 2012 essentials on it. Migrating some small (accounting) SQL databases by installing SQL 2008 express (2005 SQL std does not work on essential 2012) and restoring the SQLbackups on new server.
2: Keep SBS 2003 for SQL 2005 compatibility reasons in same network. The SQL 2005 runs a mission critical 11 Gb database that will not fit in 2008 express. Reinstalling on larger disks w SSD boot was an idea..
I have tried to install the 2012 server on the network but run into domain issues way above me. I really don´t need much of the bells and whistles in the servers apart from a functioning remote access, file server and SQL hosting. The DHCP is currently provided by the netgear router but WINS by the SBS2003.
What are the best options here ?
Any particular sources of reading for a non IT pro to get up running with a "barebone" setup ?
