setting up trust between 2 forests - cannot connect to domain.local

i am setting up trust between 2 forests.

they are both on seperate sites, domain.local and domain.com

when i setup the stub zone in DNS it does not resolve the FQDN but it validates and creates the zone with an SOA record, NS record and A record for the DNS server

i can ping server.domain. local but not domain.local, so when i try to set up the trust it does not find the domain and the trust cannot create.

is there anything else required to get this working or is there a limitation because one of the sites is domain.local?
