RDP session to Server 2012 freezes intermittently on Microsoft DirectAccess

Hi,

When we use a Remote Desktop connection manager, like this one from Microsoft, RoyalTS, Terminals or Devolutions, to connect to a Server 2012 through DirectAccess, every now and then the screen freezes for 10 to 15 seconds. The time between two freezes varies from 20 seconds to a few minutes, so this is quite frustrating since we are using a RDP connection manager all the time.

• We experience this issue  only from a W7 client on DirectAccess
• We do not have this issue from the corporate network or from a W8 client
• We have no problems connecting to older servers 2003 and 2008 R2
• Also no freezes when using the Windows RDP (mstsc.exe v8), so only with programs that use the ActiveX control (mstscax.dll)

Furthermore we have tried all kind of performance, cache and display options, but none of them worked.
Windows Updates are all installed and we have used different computers, allthough all of them domain joined.

According to the support engineer of our RDP connection manager software it looks like a networking issue with the RDP 8 specs. As soon as one of the other protocol versions (< Windows 2012) is used, we don't experience any of those issues. RDP 8 features some dynamic bandwidth adaptation algorithm and it seems it's not really working well over DirectAccess - at least when used through the ActiveX control.

Can anyone confirm this behaviour?

Additional information:
• All Server 2012 are running on ESXi 5.1
• Clients: Windows 7 32-bit
• RDP 8 installed locally

Kind regards,
Gerrie
