I have setup a small home lab using Windows Server 2012 and Windows 7 clients. I've found that my Windows 7 machines and any recently created Server 2012 member servers are not creating A records or PTR records when added to the domain. I see the first few machines (servers and clients) that I created are in DNS so it must have been working at some point. I'm not really sure where to go from here.
I did run "dcdiag /test:dns /e /v", and don't see any obvious errors or problems but I'm not really sure what to look for. The table at the end shows a pass for all tests on both of my DNS servers
If I run "ipconfig /registerdns" on a client or member server that is not auto-registering it does create the A record that way.
