Using the MMC, I am having problems connecting to our Windows DNS servers, that were recently upgraded from 2008 to 2008 R2, from our Windows XP/2003 systems only. Dnscmd.exe on XP/2003 no longer works as well. It is only really an issue for our users that are still running XP and our terminal servers which are 2003. There are no issues connecting from Windows Vista/7/2008/2008 R2 computers. The error returned when I attempt to connect from the XP/2003 MMC console is "The server is unavailable. Would you like to add it anyway?". If I add it regardless and go to properties, I can still successfully run a simple and recursive query. That is fine if the console is just not compatible with 2008 R2. More than anything I would just like to know what has changed that is preventing XP/2003 MMC from connecting to the 2008 R2 DNS servers. The only real issue we need to address is our 2003 terminal servers that we use from remote access and remote administration.
