Heartbeat connection

hi gurus, i had two servers. Not sure whether the connection I made between the two servers will serve as a heartbeat.

How do you guys do it?

Here's what I did:

Server1 - 192.168.7.1/24

Server2 - 192.168.7.2/24

Server NIC1 and Server2 NIC1  connected with a LAN cable.

Aside from the connection, is there some other configuration that should be done? or does it need some software to monitor the connection?
