I have set up a PPTP PEAP-MS-CHAP v2 VPN and it is all working fine so far. However it is not possible to log into the VPN with accounts that contain German Umlaut characters. I think it is a character set issue because when I try to log in with user accounttröte the corresponding log entry in the event viewer reads:
The user tröte connected from xxxxx but failed an authentication attempt due to the following reason: The specified user account does not exist.
So it seems the umlaut gets garbled in the process and naturally the server won't find the user account then. Is there any thing I can do to correct this or is my only option to rename the accounts and remove any possible umlauts (and generally all non-ascii characters)?
The OS on the VPN server is Windows 2003 SP2, the OS on the client machines is Windows 7.
