gpupdate issue when connected via Always On VPN

Hi,

We've recently deployed always on vpn, and notice the following :

* When connected, and try to perform a gpupdate :
The processing of Group Policy failed. Windows attempted to read the file \\internal.customer.com\sysvol\internal.customer.com\Policies\{A677847F-B935-4BEC-A8E7-73E17741F0FA}\gpt.ini from a domain controller and was not successful. Group Policy settings may not be applied until this event is resolved. This issue may be transient and could be caused by one or more of the following:
a) Name Resolution/Network Connectivity to the current domain controller.
b) File Replication Service Latency (a file created on another domain controller has not replicated to the current domain controller).
c) The Distributed File System (DFS) client has been disabled.

* I'm able to ping hostnames on netbios names.
* I'm able to connect eg via RDP to servers.
* nltest /dsgetdc:internal.customer.com shows correct results.
* nlookup connects to the DC, and works in resolving hostnames

* When i try to connect to a DC or any other server via \\DC01\ for example, I get promoted with :
"enter your credentials", "connect a smartcard", "the system cannot contact a domain controller to service the authentication request. Please try again later"

* When I connect to the same domaincontroller via \\DC01.internal.customer.com I can access it.

[edit] We're using user certificates only for AOVPN > user tunnel only, no device tunnel [/edit]
