Increase DHCP scope/subnet mask

(Windows Server 2008 R2 setup. 2x DC's both running DHCP and DNS, AD Integrated)

Hi All,

Straight to the point, I've run out of IP's.

Using 172.16.0.0 sat on 255.255.252.0 netmask. - split over two servers up to the max 172.16.3.254.

With in the scope I have reservations and some static mappings on a few clients and therefor looking for the easiest way of increasing the IP addresses with little affect.

Now I'm having the thought that if I could increase the netmask to (say) 255.255.0.0 and change the Address Pool to start from 172.16.4.1 so that everything in the original scope can stay as it is (if reservation or static).

Would this mean that all devices can still communicate even though some are in the 255.255.252.0 net mask ?

Would this work or is this going to be a lot bigger task then I thought.

One website I found regarding the change of netmask is:
windowstricks.in/2009/06/how-to-change-subnet-mask-of-dhcp-scope.html

Thanks in advance.

Tom
