MMC freezes when trying to delete glue record in DNS

Ever since my switch to 2008 R2 when it was first released, I have been unable to delete glue records.  MMC asks if I really want to delete the glue record ("Do you want to delete the glue records ______?"), but freezes before I can click Yes or No. Alt + Y/Alt + N doesn't get past it; the only way to continue is to end the process with the task manager/procexplorer, then open a new instance of MMC.  The glue record remains, undeleted, seemingly impossible to remove.

DHCP Renewal Creates DNS Updates for Two Computer Names

I've noticed that in some cases where we've renamed systems and they reboot, the systems will register the old and new computer name in DNS. Here's an example from the DHCP logs

11,08/13/15,07:46:55,Renew,10.17.205.223,5TH-86032.mydomain.com,9C8E99DE5F7F,,3179929243,0,,,

32,08/13/15,07:46:55,DNS Update Successful,10.17.205.223,5TH-86032.mydomain.com,,,0,6,,,

The new name is 5TH-86032 but the old name, HOC-86032, is still registering. I can't figure out how to prevent this. This HP systems have vPro enabled on them so that may be a possibility.

Windows 2008r2 NPS (Port Unreachable)

Hi, I have just installed Windows 2008r2 and NPS (Radius).  Everything in configure NPS seems correctly and NPS service is started/running.  After added Netgear AP IP with Secret in NPS Client as it should, however, the client fails to authenticate to NPS,  In Windows 2008, I installed the Wireshark and captured packet.  I configured client PEAP authentication, I see everytime, client sends Access-Request (port 1812), the Windows 2008r2 NPS responses:   xxx... (Port Unreachable),  it seems to me that NPS is not running; therefore port 1812 is not listenning.  But  I ensure that NPS was running, Stop and Restart NPS no help.

Any help are appreciated. Tim.

Some of the Sites not opening... Is it DNS Problem?

$

Sir,

We are facing difficulties to access some of websites from our Private Network(Inside Network Connected through SonicWALL 8500).

We have raised a complaint to SonicWALL. They told that, There is problem with DNS Server. But, I am not able confirm and conclude that, whether it is DNS Problem. Because, All other Website's are opening fine. No issue with that.

This is our Scenario. We are having Two ISP's.  We have connected these two ISP Links to SonicWALL 8500. These two ISP are configured in Load balancing Method in SonicWALL. We are having 4 DNS Server's in Public IP's and Two DNS Server's in our Local Network for Local Users.

We are facing this issue in our Local Network only(Which is connected to the Internet through SonicWALL ). We have checked these Sites from our both ISP IP's directly. It is working fine.

What are the steps to identify whether it is DNS Problem? Also, From SonicWALL side they asked us to add our Outside DNS IP address in our Local DNS(Inside DNS). Is it required?

In my point of view, Without this IP entry all other websites are working fine. Is it required?

Please help us to resolve this issue.

Hi,

I am using Windows Server 2012 R2. I am deploying Direct Access on it. I don't have any internal LAN and both the interface are public IP enabled. I want to change network profile to public, currently which is domain authenticated. I have tried to change it to public via power shell using this command

set-NetConnectionProfile -InterfaceAlias external -NetworkCategory Public

but no luck server is showing an error

set-NetConnectionProfile : Unable to set the NetworkCategory due to one of the following possible reasons: not running

PowerShell elevated; the NetworkCategory cannot be changed from 'DomainAuthenticated'; user initiated changes to

As error showing I have also tried Network List Manager Policy from Group Policy but the problem remain same.

Can someone please help me as I am unable to deploy direct access because of this.

File Sharing with firewall on Sever 2012 r2

Hi,

I'm new to the hole Windows Server 2012 thing but currently I'm trying to configure my server in the correct way.

It's a file server and I connect via VPN to it. Now I'm fighting with some firewall settings. My goal is, that i can access shared folders only through the local IP address. I set the Ip range of the VPN from 10.10.10.1 to 10.10.10.255.

Although i disabled file sharing for all network profiles, i can still access over the local Ip of the server (10.10.10.1). Why is this possbile?

A second thing what I'm trying to figure out is: How can i configure the firewall, that i can not open a shared folder through the public ip adress of the server. Even if i set the remote adress for the firewall rules to local subnet, i can still access through the public ip when I'm connected to VPN.

Thanks for your help!

Multiple/conditional DNS forwarders

$

I have a windows domain controller (server 2012 R2) with nameserver configured.
Only one domain exists.
For contents filtering I am using OpenDNS and set up forwarders to these nameservers instead of "normal ones".
This works fine, but I would like requests from certain machines (or even better, certain users) to be forwarded to the "normal" nameservers instead of OpenDNS.

I still want these certain machines or users adapters to point at the local nameserver for resolving queries to local resources, which means that I cannot tweak DHCP to anything special for these machines.

Is this possible with only one windows domain ?

Migration from Infoblox DNS / DHCP to Windows Server 2008 R2 ADS Integrated DNS and DHCP

$

Hi Guys

In a couple of weeks we will migrate our DNS / DHCP Services from Infoblox Boxes to Windows Server 2008 R2.
Migrating the DHCP part will be an easy step, so it is not necessary to talk about it.

The first and very important step is migrating the DNS.
I've read a lot about the migration and how it should be going. I've also chatted with our technology partner and have now a lot of information about the situation.
But I'm not sure what would be the best approach to finalize the migration successfully.
Has somebody experience with DNS migrations like this? Any help would be very appreciated!

We have two domain controllers and the DNS should be installed on this two dcs, ad integrated.
The main question is, can we build the microsoft dns concurrently to the infoblox dns?
Or is there another procedure or circumstances, which require other steps to go forward?

We have only a few DNS entries in Infoblox, which must be migrated or created in the microsoft dns. So importing the whole dns data from Infoblox is not necessary.
What we know is, that we must change the DNS entries manually on every server, switches and the firewall.
Do the DCs register in the new DNS properly when we reconfigure the DNS server entries?

Thanks for any answer.

The computer did not resync because no time data was available (w32tm)

Hi everyone,
I a new too this, so please be patient with me.  I am trying to sync client time with the server time.  We have PC's on the factory floor called Clock in that require the engineer too clock in after at the begin and end of the task.  I am having trouble getting the clock in machines’ to sync with the DHCP server Windows’ Server 2003 SE SP1 which has the w32tm.

I have tried a few ways to configure the time sever but I keep getting

C:\Documents and Settings\nrothwell>w32tm /resync /rediscover
Sending resync command to local computer...
The computer did not resync because no time data was available.

I do not want the time server to obtain the time from a external source but from the DHCP server its self.

I have used the following: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/929276 and it still has not resolved my problem.   I am not sure if I have changed the reg settings correctly.
I have aslo read the following:
www.mmmug.co.uk/files/216/download.aspxwhich is very good and useful.  I just can’t seem to get my head around this problem.

Please help

Kind Regards

RRAS VPN - DMZ / LAN routing and Internet access

$

Assuming the following configuration:

-the RRAS server (Win Server 2012 R2) has two NICs: one connected to the Internet with the public IP address 133.33.33.33, the other one connected to the Internal network with the IP address 10.1.100.250 (there is no NAT in my DMZ).

Internet interface:

  • IP: 133.33.33.33
  • Mask: 255.255.255.0
  • Gateway: 133.33.33.1

Intranet interface:

  • IP: 10.1.100.250
  • Mask: 255.255.255.0
  • No gateway

-my VPN clients are getting IP addresses from the DHCP: 172.16.1.0/24

-RRAS configured for VPN access (so enabled as an IPv4 router for LAN too)

-IPv4 forwarding enabled

-RRAS filters are disabled

My VPN clients are properly getting IP address from the DHCP server in 10.1.100.0 subnet but my issue is that if I don't configure any IPv4 static routes in the RRAS management console the VPN clients are unable to communicate with the internal network. I don't mind configuring static routes for my internal network but I would like also to have the VPN clients using Internet through the VPN tunnel but it's going to be an annoying job to summarize the public internet IPs...

  • Is that normal that I have to configure static routes to make the VPN clients work? What about Internet? Any way I can troubleshoot this?
  • Is there any documentation around on a DMZ setup and best practices?

PS: I tried DirectAcces but most of my client applications are not compatible with IPv6.

Restrict Access on Work Item Team Foundation Server

Hi,

In my company we have a TFS Server 2013 Update 5, linked to an AD. The AD has two domains (I changed the name) :

  • in.microsoft.be
  • out.microsoft.be

The TFS server is configured to contain :

  • One collection
  • One project
  • Four Team in this project

First, I have a question :

Is there a way to restrict the view, for external users (in the tree domain called out.microsoft.be), to only view the bugs they entered ? So, by the same way, they won't be able to see any other things, like : projects, tasks, and so on.

Apparently it is impossible in TFS 2013, even with update 5, because the Stackeholder role has still an access to others work items. Is it really true and impossible to do a workaround ?

Arnaud Helin

Hi all;

Suppose I have set up a scope in SRV01 to be in Active mode. Is it possible to change its state to Standby mode (on the fly) without deconfigurig it and then configuring it again with my desired configuration?

Thanks

Remote Administration of External DirectAccess Clients

I've read conflicting articles about remote administration of external DA clients. One Technet blog here http://blogs.technet.com/b/edgeaccessblog/archive/2010/09/14/how-to-enable-remote-desktop-sharing-rds-rdp-from-corporate-machines-to-directaccess-connected-machines.aspx says:

"Because we use IPv6 in Direct Access, any corporate client that wants to communicate to the DirectAccess clients must have an IPv6 address.  We can set up either a real IPv6 addressing scheme or set up ISATAP, which does not require IPv6 aware routers, switches or hubs".

But then when I read anything about configuring DA anywhere else on Technet it says using ISATAP on the corporate network is not supported.

Confused???
