How to configure Stub Zones for External domains?

A question I would really appreciate some help with:

We have an internal DNS server (2008 R2) configured with forward lookup zones to the "xyz.com" as a primary domain.  Currently all subdomains are statically assigned to an IP address (some are internal such as "mail.xyz.com" and some are external and hosted by a web-hoster such as "www.xyz.com)".  Once we remove these static routes, the DNS server cannot resolve "www.xyz.com" for example, because it thinks it "owns" that domain.

My question is how can we segregate these subdomains of "xyz.com" so that queries for the local subdomains stay local, and queries for the subdomains hosted externally get forwarded as such?

Will replacing the domain's primary zone with a stub-zone solve this issue?

Thank you!
