2003>2008 DHCP and NAT...quick question here

Hi all,

Long story short, I am working with a 2003 server, This is 1 server that is DC, AD, DNS, DHCP, NAT and Exchange 2003. 2 NICs, one internal and One External. With all the problems on Mulihomed server, this server does run flawlessly for the most part. Everything works with no issues, No DNS or DHCP issues on the internal network. I know this is NOT the best practice so I would like to change this.

With this being said, My goal here is to upgrade and spread out between 3 servers (VMs).

1. DC, with DNS, DHCP etc

2. Exchange server with local storage.

3. External, NAT and IIS. (firewall will be a external device or VM).

I want to move service by service over to 2008 before pulling out the 2003 server. My first step is to move DHCP and NAT over to to 2008 server. This is my first step to start using 2008.

As DHCP and NAT will live on different servers(currently they live on one server). I have looked and cant find a clear answer. Once DHCP is moved to the 2008 (future DC), and I setup NAT on another server, How does DHCP know where the NAT server is, and how does NAT know where the DHCP server is ?

I want to start with this as Internet will be the biggest problem for the clients but, I need DHCP and NAT to be clearly talking as I have looked over settings on both and can not find that answer.

Can anyone give a quick process for doing this ? What am I missing ? Google is not my friend here, as I can find info on setting up NAT OR DHCP but, can not find how to get them both working together.

Thanks for your time !

-Dave
