RRAS + NAT + Hyper-V network

Hi,

I don't know if this should be the question for Hyper-V forum, but I assumed it's more connected to the network infrastructure than Hyper-V. My problem is connected with connecting Hyper-V hosts to the local network. I will explain it more detailed now.

In my company we have one server which manages our local network and gives us opportunity to connect to the network from outside through VPN. Now we need to create couple of virtual machines for testing purposes. And now I have a problem setting up the network environment for virtual machines and connecting them to our local area network. I will now write down our basic network configuration and ask you for help.

As I said above, we have one server with Windows Server 2012 R2 installed on it, which has 2 network adapters. One is connected directly to ISP modem and second one is connected to a switch to which all other network machines are connected. The server is also set to do routing work between our machines and that's setup and working very well so far. The server is set to work as Active Directory server, DNS server, DHCP server and as a router through RRAS service (with NAT).

First network adapter has set static IP address of 192.168.1.2 within ISP router subnet and this adapter serves and set as public adapter for internet connection for our network. Second network adapter has set local static IP address of 10.0.0.1/255.255.254.0 and it serves as our local area network connection (so this is DNS, DHCP and default gateway IP address for our network). Also, a static route between two network adapters has been set in NAT on the server. Everything is working ok with local machines, they are connecting to the internet, connecting to each other and we are able to access our server from outside through VPN.

Now we need to set couple of virtual machines and connect them to our local network. Server is now set up as a Hyper-V host but now I'm having troubles to make network environment for virtual machines with current local area network setup, to give virtual machines access to our network and internet.

I've created virtual switch in Hyper-V and tried various things, like setting it up like external switch, attaching it to local network adapter, but in this case I'm loosing connection between our local machines and the server (maybe I have to do some additional configuration to make this work). The other thing I've tried is to set this virtual switch as an Internal switch and then somehow connect it to our local network, but again no luck.

In short: there is a server with 2 NICs; one directly connected to ISP router, 2nd to physical network switch, all local machines are connected to this switch too; server is set as AD, DNS, DHCP and Routing server; and now we need to add couple of virtual machines to the network which will be hosted on this server with ability to access the internet.

Is there a way to do this with current network configuration, what and how to do or there's a need for network reconfiguration?

Thanks in advance!
