DDNS, Dynamic Updates, Active Directory Integrated Zones, Dynamically Confused

Hi all,

I'm studying for my 70-640 and have ran into a DNS wall. If anyone could help with my DNS questions I'd be most grateful as I can't seem to find a clear answer anywhere!

1. Could someone please define exactly what the difference is between DDNS, Dynamic DNS and Dynamic updates are?

- My understanding is that DDNS = Dynamic DNS, that this is some sort of a service that you turn on when you install DNS so that clients can update their records in DNS when they are issued new IPs from DHCP.

- A 'dynamic update' is when the client does just that and updates its records in DNS. I assume that only primary zones or active directory integrated zones can be dynamic as they are read/write.

- Also the MS self-paced book states 'When the DNS service runs on a DC and is integrated with the directory service, it runs in DDNS mode" = is this refering to active directory integrated zones? Does this mean that if your zone is an ADI zone that it will be dynamically update, thus you will be running a Dynamic DNS?

2. Can a zone be stored in active directory but not be active directory integrated?

Thanks in advance!
