RRAS and port forwarding?

$

Hello... I have Server 2008 R2 as a standalone server and not part of a domain.  It has RRAS enabled for VPN connectivity.  User from external offices are connecting to it successfully, however, when they attempt to use QuickBooks it would appear that the ports needed to establish a connection are being blocked.  The firewall on the server has been configured correctly and users within the main office can connect to QB without a problem.

Does RRAS need to have the ports forwarded or allowed rather?  I did attempt to add inbound and outbound filters for the proper ports, however, when I did I lost my remote connection to the server.

Any help understanding this would be greatly appreciated.

Server 2012 DirectAccess on VMware Workstation

Hey folks,

I'm new to DirectAccess, and am trying to wrap my head around it. I'm trying to test out Windows Server 2012 DirectAccess in a VMware Workstation lab environment. All of my lab systems are using the VMware NAT network.

The Windows Server 2012 system with the DirectAccess role has a "private" network interface on the NAT network, and a "public" network interface, with a statically configured public IPv4 address on thehost-only network. It is configured using the Edge option in the DirectAccess wizard. The "public" IPv4 address is the IP address I plugged into the wizard, for the system's public IPv4 address.

I have a Windows 8 Enterprise client system that was initially on the NAT network during provisioning, so it could get the DirectAccess GPOs, but then I moved it over to an isolated host-only network (VMnet2), to emulate being on the Internet (even though it does not have access to public DNS, or the ability to route to the Internet), and configured it with a public IPv4 address on the same subnet as the DirectAccess server's "public" interface.

The Windows 8 client seemingly does not have the ability to establish an IP-HTTPS tunnel to the DirectAccess server.

Any thoughts on what I've got configured incorrectly? I'm not sure which default gateway and DNS server address to configure on the Windows 8 client's "public" network interface, since it's not really connected to the Internet.

Cheers,
Trevor

Windows Server 2012 Essentials - DNS returns non-existent domain even though DNS forwarder responds correctly

Hi,

I have windows server 2012 essentials setup and I'm using it for DNS since it handles all its necessary entries for easy domain joining and such.  However, I'm using my router for DHCP, static assigning of IP addresses to some servers, and therefore the DNS entries for those servers; in addition I put those servers on the companyname.com domain so that demos and stuff show better URLs, but there are also externally hosted DNS entries that manage the rest of the companyname.com domain (i.e. our corporate site) so that its available externally.  In addition the external DNS is through comcast business so technically those are assigned by their DHCP and could change.  So, what I wanted to do is to have the windows server 2012 essentials handle the companyname.local domain, and then forward all other requests to the router which knows about the special internal companyname.com IP addresses, as well as the external comcast DNS servers.  My understanding is that this should be accomplished with a DNS forwarder pointed at the router, which I have configured.  My router at 192.168.1.1, the server is at 192.168.1.25, and clients are setup (through DHCP) to have their DNS server as 192.168.1.25 (the server).

The problem is that what appear to be random fqdns cannot be resolved by the server; i.e. lets say I have a server foo (.50) and bar (.51); foo will work on both

nslookup foo.companyname.com                         // => returns 192.168.1.50
nslookup foo.companyname.com 192.168.1.1     // => returns 192.168.1.50

However, bar won't work on the server, but will on the router

nslookup bar.companyname.com                         // => returns Non-existent domain
nslookup bar.companyname.com 192.168.1.1     // => returns 192.168.1.51

I haven't found the exact way to get it to work, but if I restart the server, the query bar again from the server it will correctly return the forwarded request's answer.  I'm not sure what's happening, although it seems like perhaps the router is sometimes responding slowly or the server is somehow not getting a response, and then its caching that forever.  My questions are:

  1. How can I debug this further to figure out why the router replies with the DNS entry, but the server doesn't, even though it has a forwarded pointed at the router?
  2. 2) To test out whether its caching a bad DNS request for ever and ever, can I force the server to not cache any DNS requests and always forward items it doesn't know to the forwarder?  Or perhaps more performant, just unknown entries? (although the router and server are close enough, the business is small enough, that I'm not concerned if every non companyname.local request had to travel to the router and back, and it will correctly cache the responses from comcast's DNS servers).

Thanks,
\Peter

How to forward a port to a Camera DVR IPv4 on Windows Server 2008 R2

Hello ,

We install a DVR for security cameras! Windows Server 2008 R2 detect and assign an IP address to the DVR: 192.168.2.15

I did test and Ping the 192.168.2.15 and the results are OK

I need to point the port 7000 to 192.168.2.15 this so I can access my security cameras via the server IP address 20X.23X.44X.11X:7000

I probably slept in the class when the course was talking about Port Forwarding! :P

Windows 2008r2 NPS (Port Unreachable)

Hi, I have just installed Windows 2008r2 and NPS (Radius).  Everything in configure NPS seems correctly and NPS service is started/running.  After added Netgear AP IP with Secret in NPS Client as it should, however, the client fails to authenticate to NPS,  In Windows 2008, I installed the Wireshark and captured packet.  I configured client PEAP authentication, I see everytime, client sends Access-Request (port 1812), the Windows 2008r2 NPS responses:   xxx... (Port Unreachable),  it seems to me that NPS is not running; therefore port 1812 is not listenning.  But  I ensure that NPS was running, Stop and Restart NPS no help.

Any help are appreciated. Tim.

The server with this IP address is not authoritative for the required zone

When attempting to configure conditional forwarders between two .local domains in two different physical offices, its working fine one way, but the other way it throws the following error:

"The server with this IP address is not authoritative for the required zone."

Domain ABC.local (10.2.12.3): Windows Server 2008 R2.  Conditional forwarder to XYZ.local (192.168.10.1) goes through no problems.

Domain XYZ.local (192.168.10.1): Windows Server 2012 Standard.  Conditional forwarder to ABC.local (10.2.12.3) gives the error.

The domain and the forest functional level are set to Server 2008 R2.

Any ideas?

NPS SQL logging bug - 32-bit signed ints used for 32-bit unsigned data

$

Hi,

I have noticed a bug in the way NPS logs to SQL in the schema and stored procedure that it creates.

At present, it uses a database schema that uses ints (which are fundamentally 32-bit signed) for data that is in the RADIUS specifications 32-bit unsigned and therefore has a larger range of potential positive values. This means that bigints (signed 64-bit) must be used to correctly store the values.

This bug means that I frequently see insert failures where a value from a NAS overflows an int and failure events from NPS in the Event Log.

How would I go about getting a fix from Microsoft to correct this behaviour or at least making the product team aware of this bug?

Hi All,

i am configuring a windows server 2012 as a VPN server for my company, the server is located at our DMZ zone as below:

Internal - FW2 - DMZ - FW1 - Internet - Client

this server is not joining domain and using standalone CA. i have tried to cofigure the server following some guides that i have read over internet and got stuck at a part where i need to use the Certification Template to setup the Online Responder template. as i am using local account and is not joined domain, i did not have Certification Template at my CA console. is there a way that i can setup RRAS server at DMZ zone without joining domain?

DNS reolution case sensativity.....

I understand that DNS is case insensitive.  However, we have an application that requires the DNS resolution to either be all uppercase or all lower case and not change.  If it changes the application breaks.  Yeah, I know.

So, is there a way to force the DNS server or DNS client to convert/resolve any DNS request results in a certain case.  So, if the client tries to resolve Hello.YES.com and the client requires that to be all lower case, can we force the client or DNS server to readthe results in ONLY lower case (i.e. hello.yes.com)?

Thanks,

Dave

Hi All ,

I have  domain Controller (windows server 2003 sp2 64bit ,virtual) that restart suddenly  from 2 to 3 times during the week .

Its restarts with the following error (A critical system process, C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe, failed with status code c0000005.  The machine must now be restarted.)

I checked the server for virus or third party  application but  didn't find any issue.

  We will be going from a 192.168.10/24 network to a 192.168.10/23 network and I am wondering how to properly setup the reverse lookup zones.  Previously I would have set up and 192.168.10.0 and a 192.168.11 reverse zones. Is this still the best option?

Jim

Merging IAS 2003 config with NPS 2008

Hi,

I have Radius services running for my Network devices using IAS in a Win 2k3 server and for a separate set  of devices using NPS on Win 2k8.

I wish to export the config from IAS and merge it with the NPS config. When I am exporting it using "IasMigReader.exe" utility and then importing using the NetSh command, it replaces the existing config in the NPS and doesnt overide it.

Is there a way to keep the current NPS config and just append the exported config from the IAS.

Thanks,

DNS Query Question

We have a system that has some issues I would like some help with.  When we lose contact with our DNS server, which is on another network, EVERYTHING slows down.  I ran Wire Shark on the interface of one of our clients while disconnected and found that it kept trying to query crl sites but it would never time out.  We changed the DNS settings to include one address that was ping-able, but not running DNS Server services, and one fictious IP address that would not be reachable and ran Wire Shark again.  This time we found queries to both addresses.  The site which we could ping would reply instantly saying "Destination Unreachable".  The fictious site would not reply at all (obviously) and the client would continue to query it.  It would wait for the time out and query it again.  Almost 100 times this would happen.  The program which would normally take 2-3 minutes to load, was now taking 20-30 minutes to load.  I went into the Host file on the client and added the crl websites to a new pingable address and loaded the program again.  This time it was back to normal.  So lets say my DNS server is 10.10.10.10 and my client is on 100.100.100.100.  I set primary DNS to 10.10.10.10 and secondary DNS to 100.100.100.105.  The secondary DNS is not a a DNS server, but a machine that is ping-able with the entries made in the HOSTS file.  So if my primary goes down, it will look to the secondary and get a "Destination Unreachable" response and carry on as usual.

My question is two fold.  First, is this ok to do?  And second, what will happen when the primary comes back on-line?

How to configure DNS so that Google maps can be viewed?

I had configured my DNS then add three websites and it is up and running...

Next, I want to configure my DNS so that my client computer can view google maps. I tried configuring the host maps.google.com, the website can be viewed but other components of that website doesn't appear like the map itself. Does that mean that those components has IP addresses as well?

Can someone tell me the structure of google maps or how i can make my DNS mapped the whole website?
