Users cannot connect to VPN server, error 645

Hello,

I have a problem connecting to my VPN server (Server 2008 R2). I have successfully configured the VPN server along with Network Policy Server. I can connect to the VPN server with the Administrator account and that's it. I configured the NPS policies to allow also a special group (VPN Users), which can connect to the VPN server.

The problem is that the users that are in the group can't connect to the server, although the policy should allow them to connect. Everytime I try to connect I get error 645: There was an internal authentication error.

Any clues what could have gone wrong?

RRAS NAT problems

Hi,

I`ve been using 2008 server as a LAN router (without NAT) with no problems, but now I need to change it and use it with NAT.

The problem is that NAT is not working, I only see dashes (-) in all the columns. I´ve reconfigured it like 1 millions times but it still doesnt work.

I made a test at home whit virtual machines and it works fine except in one 2008 server. In this virtual machine, a few weeks ago, I installed Microsoft Forefront to try it and after unistalling Forefront,  NAT in RRAS stop working.  I think Forefront is the problem, because I installed and uninstalled it in the real machine and same problem happens.

Thanks a lot

Server 2008 R2 - Multiple Default Gateways - manually set metrics

Hi,

Server 2008R2 PDC, single DHCP scope.

I want to add a second gateway to my 003 Router setting in my scope.

Already have 192.168.1.1 as my main DG, and i want to add in 1.251, as a failover incase 1.1 is unavailable.

However when i add it in, Windows gives both DG entries the same metric of 25 which causes routing issues as its sending some packets through the 251 GW.

Can i set the DCHP scope at server level to give the standby DG .251 a higher metric that the primary DG 1.1, rather than have to change every workstation manually in the NIC properties?

Thanks

Why does UK.com reply to all queries with a fixed IPAddress?

So, I work on an application which is shipped commercially. Recently I got a report of it hanging on startup for a customer. I looked into it a bit, and the Windows machine is under the uk.com domain. After looking at the procmon.pml file, I observed that my application seemed to have a few calls similar to this:

Create File \\GUID\PIPE\winreg (Path not found)
TCP Reconnect localmachinename:<port> -> 208.91.197.189:epmap
TCP Reconnect localmachinename:<port> -> 208.91.197.189:epmap

I got on the machine today and tried a nslookup of the GUID. It returned me an address of 208.91.197.189. I was like "AH HAH!". Then I started trying to figure out why? After more experimentation I found that it returns an address for any random string you pass it. (To see what I mean, open cmd and type "nslookup", then type f.uk.com). You will get back an address of 208.91.197.189.

So, a couple of questions. Why would uk.com return back a fixed address for every string passed to it? This doesn't seem like normal behavior IMHO.

Furthermore, after more researching, the \\GUID\PIPE\winreg shows each time my application does a RegConnectRegistry() api call. That connection attempt fails (The registry value doesn't exist), which causes windows under the covers to try and resolve the GUID, which eventually causes the TCP Reconnect to the resolved GUID address. Is that GUID a session name, or where does that GUID come from. I have tried it on many machines and it is not a well known GUID. So, it seems specific to each machine, but I cannot find it in the registry as a packed GUID, or a registry formatted GUID. I'm not sure where windows gets it from, or if there is a way to change the behavior. The app is actually having to time out on every failed registry read which is causing the hang. Why is windows doing this for failed registry reads?

Thanks for your time and input!

How to filter static IP ?

Hi ..

I want to know is there anyway to filter some static IPs ? I knew there are some new features in windows server 2008 R2 for filtering IPs that are given by DHCP Lease, can I do something like this for static IPs?

DHCP Ipconfig /renew do not work for specific DHCP Scope

Dear Team,

I have issue with one of the DHCP scope where the IP is not getting released to the client computers. Some times it leases IP and some time it does not and if connect the same system to different DHCP scope it obtains IP address.

I have this problem on Win7 and Win XP also. (Hope this is not related to OS)

I have performed the following trouble shootings.

  1. Connected system to different VLAN and found the DHCP server is releasing IP address but not for IP10.230.75.XX
  2. Cleared all IP from Address lease.
  3. Restarted DHCP Server and Client Service.
  4. Restarted GTDC3 Server
  5. Deactivated and Activated Scope.
  6. Reserved IP and checked.
  7. Deleted and Recreated DHCP Scope of10.230.75.XX

Error when ipconfig /release is executed :

An error occurred while renewing interface local area connection. The name specified in the network control block is used on a remote adapter. The NCB is the data.

Please help.

Thanks,

Chendur

DHCP in CLuster mode (no storage)

hi all,

i want to create DHCP cluster (windows 2008 or 2012 doesn't really matter) on to servers to make my DHCP redundant.

the problem that i'm trying to solve is how to create it without external Storage (SAN, NAS).

the reason is because i don't want to have single point of failure, i rather have local DB with Replication of them between the servers (i don't want 2 independent servers) so they should function as one DHCP server.

is anyone here has solution?

thanks,

Gal

VPN via RAS is not working anymore

Hi

Issue:

If a user tries to connect to the VPN this is working, but he/she can't ping nor access anything on the network. This is since we installed the updates from last Tuesday/Wednesday (updates were mainly regarding .net Framework & 1 for Exchange)

Environment:

We have a SBS 2008 Server running and the clients are all Win 7. Updates are all installed.

Already done:

We checked and reconfigured the Routing and RAS area completely new according the Microsoft tutorials (nothing fancy, mainly default).

Further, we checked the NPS if there is causing the problem... but this is correctly configured and also nothing has changed. The thing is, nobody was ever on the server since these updates.

Unfortunately, we have no backup from the time directly before the Updates, just 1 week before (which is too far away)

We are at the end with our knowledge and working on this since days with no solution...

Help would be really appreciated! Not sure what kind of information I can give so I can help. Unfortunately, I don't get any error messages... (and of course we are googling for days..)

Thanks and best regards

Using RRAS on SBS2011 standard to connect remote networked device using VPN??

$

Hi,

Been trying to get my head around this and thought I'd ask the question here, can anyone help me please?

I have a client who has a router with VPN passthrough configured to forward PPTP to their SBS2011 standard server.

RRAS has been set up and remote clients do use this facility to obtain access to the network by using client PPTP VPN connection via the internet.

The SBS is connected using a single LAN connection. All of the PCs on the internal network access the outside world directly through the ADSL router.

On the local network there is a pair of time and attendance terminals that are interrigated by a PC on the network which obtains logs of staff in and out times. The PC only needs to know the IP addresses of the terminals to be able to talk to them.

I want to give the facility for an employee time and attendance terminal to be installed at a remote location. The only way of providing a connection at the remote location will be using a 3G router. The 3G router can act as a PPTP client and has the facility to raise the connection from its end. So I was thinking that the 3G router can dial into the SBS2011 server to create and maintain the VPN. My problem, not being a big SBS2011 person is understanding the routing requirements to allow the PC on the local network to talk to the time and attendance termainal on the remote network. I realise that the VPN client connection from the router will have a single IP address visible from the local netork but I am not sure if there is anything that can be configured to allow the terminal behind the router to be visible.

Does anyone understand what I am describing and can you help me to understand the SBS configuration and romote router configuration that may allow what I am suggesting to work please?

Alternatively can anyone tell me if it is simply not possible?

Many thanks,

David

How to setup an NPS to hand out a static IP address for a specific VPN user when authenticating with RADIUS

I have a small Cisco anyconnect VPN where we use RADIUS to authenticate users.  The RADIUS server is 2008R2 with the network policy server role installed.  I'd like to have my active directory user get a static IP address when they sign into the VPN.  Could anyone point me to directions on how to configure my server to do this?  I know I need to set extra attributes for Framed-IP-Address and Framed-IP-Netmask but I am unsure how to do this.  I would very much appreciate any assistance, thanks!

Win7 client cannot join domain, the screen displays "cannot find domain controller"

Hi all,

Having DNS server (DNS_1): 103.20.76.2 , is DC: local.com

Having other DNS server (DNS_2): 103.20.76.3, is DC: test.com

Having 1 Win7 non-domain client.

COnfiguration:

In DNS_1, create A record for DNS_2

In Win7 client, primary DNS points to DNS_1

Steps:

Join domain "test.com" for Win7 client, but having a warning: "cannot find domain test.com"

But from Win7, DNS_1, I can ping to DNS_2. To be sure, I also add host DNS_2 in WIn7

Work arround:

In DNS_1 of Win7 client, choose Advance > type domain "test.com", but cannot join to.

-------------

Thus, I change the primary DNS of Win7 client to 103.20.76.3, I can join domain

So, I wonder why I cannot join domain "test.com" for Win7 client in case primary DNS is "DNS_1"?

If I want to use DNS_1 is primary DNS of Win7, so in DNS_1, what configuration will I confgure ?

Thanks,

I am using two Windows 2008R2 radius servers. In one of  the radius servers, i seeExtensible Authentication Protocol Configuration setting set to value "configured"  under settings of network policies. I followed same procedure for creating the NAP policy on both the server, but one server shows this setting while other doesnt.

What can be the reason for the same ?

Static routes for VPN clients not working in Windows Server 2008 R2 RRAS

$

Hi,

I am configuring a simple hub-and-spoke VPN using Windows Server 2008 R2 and RRAS. It is going very well and I now have a router configured to establish a VPN connection to the server. However, I have having problems configuring the static route so that the server can see the LAN behind the router.

When the router establishes the VPN connection, it is assigned an IP address of 10.0.0.5 (the VPN IP address of the internal interface created by RRAS is 10.0.0.1). The LAN behind the router is 192.168.10.0/24, so for testing, I created a route using the following command:

route add 192.168.10.0 mask 255.255.255.0 10.0.0.5

This works perfectly. I can ping a computer on the remote LAN; for example:

C:\Users\Administrator>ping 192.168.10.2

Pinging 192.168.10.2 with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 192.168.10.2: bytes=32 time=506ms TTL=127
Reply from 192.168.10.2: bytes=32 time=536ms TTL=127
Reply from 192.168.10.2: bytes=32 time=508ms TTL=127
Reply from 192.168.10.2: bytes=32 time=506ms TTL=127

Here is the routing table at this point:

Now, the problem comes when I try to make this a static route. First of all, I specify the static route using the dial-in properties for the user:

After the client has established its connection, the routing tables looks thus:

Now, when I try to ping, I get a general failure:

Pinging 192.168.10.2 with 32 bytes of data:

As a relative newbie, I simply don't understand why this route is not working. It looks spot on and the only difference (although I guess it could be the key factor) is the difference in the metric (i.e. it is 24 when assigned by hand using route add, but 23 when it is a static route).

I would appreciate any help!

Thanks,

Ben

DNS Problems: Event 40960 Source LSASRV & PTR Record (same as parent folder)

$

We are having an issue with several servers which are only in a workgroup.  These servers register their DNS in a company.lcl zone, not our company.local zone which all our domain joined machines register DNS in.

One of these servers is listed correctly in the forward lookup zone but in the reverse lookup zone it is listed without its IP.  Instead, it is listed as (same as parent folder).  I tried to delete it but it is recreated immediately.  I cannot add the PTR manually.  We only have one DC but we do have a secondary DNS server.  It is listed correctly on the secondary DNS server.  We cannot ping the server by name.  We get "could not find host."

Also, all of these servers get an event 40960 warning...source LSASRV - The security system detected an authentication error for the server DNS/<servername>.company.local.  The specified user does not exist.

What is happening here?
